As I travel on book tour around the country this month, my formal meditation sitting practice is really challenging but oh so necessary. I like to use as a Go-To the Metta practice I have evolved with over the years.

Metta (maitri) is the practice of loving-kindness meditation and friendliness taught by the Buddha himself, 2,600 years ago. It is a vital component of the Buddhist wisdom teachings and their daily practice as applied compassionately in life. I have taken the basic sacred phrases from the Metta Sutra (Loving-kindness Scripture) and added many of my own over the years as they come up for me in my own prayer and chant life; you are welcome to do the same

Try repeating them with loving-awareness at the conclusion of your own daily meditation, or at any time you wish, however briefly–in your car, walking, in an elevator…

The Essence of Awakening

Lama Surya Das

As a young child playing hide and seek outside, with my cousins and siblings, in both Brooklyn and suburban Long Island, I learned an early meditation lesson: the more I stopped, and simply tuned in and sensed, directly, in the immediacy of the moment–the more focused and still I got, in body and mind– the more I saw and could see. And when I was clearer, everything became clearer. This was my youthful introduction to the harmony and oneness available via a heightened, wakeful, present awareness. I can almost see now how mind-reading works, when you utterly still your own body & mind, breath and energy for a moment.

So what does awakened awareness mean in this Modern World? What does it look like in our distracting OverInformation Age? Can the non-dual awakened state of inseparability and oneness be shared collectively, offering a unity consciousness and global banquet table for…

6 Time Management Tips from the Buddha

Lama Surya Das

Among all the substances we misuse and abuse, the greatest is time. Time is life; we squander it at our peril. Killing time deadens ourselves.

Almost everyone I encounter complains that they don’t have enough. But where did it all go? Why aren’t our labor-saving devices and faster means of travel and communication liberating us? Or at the very least, providing us with more leisure to accomplish the things that we want and need to do, or letting us simply slow down and enjoy what we’ve worked so hard for?

Does anyone have time today? I do! During the 40 years I’ve spent studying and teaching Buddhism, and in the process of writing my new book, “Buddha Standard Time: Awakening to the Infinite Possibilities of Now,” I’ve learned how to find, make, and keep time.

Actually, it’s not time we lack; it’s focus, awareness and a sense of…

A Guide to Labeling Kids items especially in a Day Care

IDmelabels-Daycare-LabelsThe importance of labeling your kid’s belongings stems from the fact that every second child at the daycare will have exactly the same set of lunch box, raincoat and pencil box. Whenever parents go out shopping for kids the tendency is to buy the best and the trendy items that kids are going to like. Items that are going to be in trend and are considered best can be almost same. Unless you as parents don’t label kids belongings chances are that kids will exchange their items with the other kids unknowingly.

Less chances of exchanging items with Name Labels

Once you have labeled the kid’s belongings appropriately chances of exchanging items in the day care or school are less. Since you have a name written on the item your kid or the coordinator of the day care center can recognize the item them self and ensure safe transportation of the item back home. Although many kids may have the same kind of water bottle, lunch box or even raincoat spotting a specific item becomes quite easy since there’s a name label fixed on it.

Helps the day care admin to locate items quickly

Even if your kid has lost, misplaced or exchanged one of the items the day care administrator can help you find that specific item for you among several same looking items if you have a name label attached to it. Many day care centers will proactively ask parents to have their kids items marked with permanent name labels. Since the day care center is responsible for safe custody of items that you send with your kids to the day care center name labels are a necessity for them.

Use bright and attractive colors especially for kids

While labeling your kids items the color of the labels should be bright and attractive since kids are attracted to these kinds of labels and will recognize them from a distance. These kinds of labels are good enough fro small kids since they are not able to read what exactly is written there on the labels. Thus color coding can be a great option to make your kid recognize his belongings and differentiate the belongings of other kids who may have the same items with them.

Know your kid’s interest and choose a School label accordingly

If your kid is interested in superheroes, get labels that have images of superheroes on them. If your kid likes football and can recognize his favorite players get labels that have football players as their core theme. Once you start inculcating your kid’s interests the benefits will be from multiple corners. Once your kid grows up you will be spared the pain of choosing anything fro your kid since he will be choosing the name labels himself or will be able to differentiate his belongings from those of others.
